Building a World

Earlier today, I was inspired by THIS POST about map making.  I am working on my rewrite, and need to have a good idea of where the characters are going and what geography they are going through.  It is finally time to start making my map.

I went to the Cartography guild website looking for tutorials, as suggested.  I didn’t find much, but I did find one that used Photoshop.  I figured I was reasonably good with Gimp, so what the heck.

So here is what I have so far:

Not much yet, bet give it a while!  Watch this space for more info.  I will be documenting my progress here as I go.

One more thing.  I need a name for the world.  I know, lame.  If anyone has suggestions though, throw them into the comment box below.

  1. Hey, thanks for the linky. Do you know if there’s a way I can follow you and get you into the blog list on my Blogger dashboard, where all the latest blog updates show up?

  2. Hey, Ryan!

Not a problem. Go to your blogger dashboard and down in the reading list, click the add button. In the “Add from URL:” box, type in “jandrewjansen.com/blog/feed/” (Without the quotes, obviously), and it should pop right into your reading list.

If you have an RSS reader, you can use the “Subscribe by RSS” Link above. I run both the RSS and the Email subscription through feedburner, which is a cool syndication system (now run by google) that gives stats on who subscribes, and who actually opens the post when they get it. Worth looking into.

I discovered that the tutorial for photoshop was not going to translate to Gimp very well, which made me sad. I think my wife has a copy of Photoshop CS4 laying around somewhere though, so I may pick it back up there.

THIS is the one I am trying to do. We’ll see how it goes.

  3. Awesome, I have you on my dashboard now!
I posted back on my blog in response to your comment. Basically I’ve been thinking about doing my own map-making tutorial on my blog, in the style of the map of Válkia. Would you be interested?

  4. It’s a butterfly, right? 😀 JK. Looks good so far. Let me think what you could name it to sound worldy… hmmm… how about Rammia (wanted to say Remmia, but that’s brand of margarine here :p) or Atelas? Or Junnine. Don’t ask me where I’m getting this stuff :p

  5. Cyvarra, Tyllera, Vallesett, Elysonne, Cantevar, Terramar, Kryst, Jypseth

Just a few off my weird imagination! Way to go on the map. I’ve just got hand drawn ones for the time being.

  6. Wow! Lot’s of suggestions… Now I have to pick something. I may end up mashing a few of the ideas together. Dunno yet.

    No, it isn’t a butterfly. :^P

Work continues. I just posted my latest progress.

  7. I think I am liking the sound of Telyrim. I have no clue why, but it seems to be sticking.

The downside is that I have two cities: Trior and Tillias. I think I am getting a bit heavy on the T’s.

    Thanks for the help!
